monção e malgaço

Minho, vinho verde - portugal

story…

A collaboration project between Joana Santiago of Quinta de Santiago & Nuno Mira do Ó of Mira do Ó. Drawn together over their love of rock music, wine & the historical varieties of northern Portugal, in particular Alvarinho but also the nearly forgotten red varieties that used to be cultivated all across the region. Sou (Soh) is Portuguese for “I am”. Originally the project was sparked as a bit of challenge they set upon themselves to produce a serious, more age worthy bottling of Alvarinho that showcased the place through tension & minearlity as opposed to up front fruit & drinkability.

They have since expanded to include a red wine, with a similar vision as the Alvarinho, but utilizing native red varieties that have nearly been forgotten to showcase the beauty & capability of this region to produce great reds as well as whites. All of the fruit for the Sou wines comes from the Quinta de Santiago estate. The wines are also produced & aged at Quinta de Santiago.

farming & Philosophy…

Farming for Sou falls in line with all the farming at Quinta de Santiago. Sustainable & organic practices throughout the vineyards, with cover crops & compost that is produced on site from the by products of the farm & wine production.

In the cellar both the white & red are natively fermented in a mixture of stainless tank & neutral oak. Aging takes place in neutral oak on the fine lees.

Vineyards…

The Alvarinho comes from a young vine plot at Quinta de Santiago called “Tentilháo” that is planted over a granite bedrock with clay & alluvial soils. The Tinto bottling, which is produced from blend of Alvarelhão, Pedral, Borraçal, Cainho
